More Than a Safari: How Travelling with Amatsiko Tours Helps Build a Better Future for Uganda

Travel with Purpose. Change Lives.

What if your African safari could do more than introduce you to breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary wildlife? At Amatsiko Tours, 20% of tour profits supports Amatsiko Preparatory School and community development through the Dream Village Project. Every journey contributes to creating educational opportunities for vulnerable children, improving access to clean water, promoting food security and supporting sustainable livelihoods in southwestern Uganda.

What If Your African Safari Could Change More Than Your Holiday?

Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of birds singing around Lake Bunyonyi. The morning mist slowly lifts from the surrounding hills, revealing beautiful green landscapes and islands scattered across the water. Somewhere nearby, fishermen prepare their traditional canoes for another day on the lake.

Later, you find yourself travelling through the breathtaking landscapes of southwestern Uganda, meeting welcoming local communities, tasting freshly prepared Ugandan food and discovering the extraordinary natural beauty that makes this country such a special destination.

Perhaps your journey will take you to the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park or the spectacular waterfalls and mountains of eastern Uganda.

These are the experiences that make travelling through Uganda unforgettable.

But what if your journey could mean something more?

What if the money you spend exploring Uganda could also help a vulnerable child attend school, provide a family with access to clean water or support a household in establishing a productive vegetable garden?

At Amatsiko Tours, we believe that travel has the potential to create connections that go far beyond sightseeing.

We believe that tourism should benefit not only the people who visit a destination but also the people who call it home.

This belief is at the heart of everything we do.

When you travel with Amatsiko Tours, you are not simply booking a safari. You are becoming part of a bigger story: a journey that connects unforgettable travel experiences with education, community development and a brighter future for the people of Uganda.

And this story began long before Amatsiko Tours existed.

1. A Dream Born in 2014: The Story Behind Amatsiko Preparatory School

Every meaningful journey begins somewhere. For us, the journey started with a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves an opportunity to learn, regardless of the circumstances into which they are born.

In the communities around Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi in southwestern Uganda, many children faced enormous difficulties accessing education. Some had lost their parents, while others came from families struggling to meet even their most basic needs.

For these children, going to school was not always guaranteed.

The challenge was not simply a lack of classrooms. Even when schools were available, expenses such as uniforms, shoes, books and other learning materials could become insurmountable barriers.

This reality inspired the beginnings of Amatsiko.

In 2005, Alex Atuheire returned to his roots near Lake Bunyonyi. Having experienced poverty and lost his father at a young age, he understood some of the difficulties faced by orphaned and vulnerable children.

He began teaching children and providing them with guidance, encouragement and educational support.

Later, Alphonse Twinamatsiko, his childhood friend, joined him. Alphonse had studied organic farming and permaculture and brought a different but complementary perspective to their shared vision.

Together, they began working with vulnerable children and families, looking beyond education to address challenges involving nutrition, hygiene, sanitation and household livelihoods.

Their grassroots work developed into Amatsiko Organisation in 2011.

Then, in 2014, Amatsiko Preparatory School opened its doors in Kabale.

The school brought together many of the children they had been supporting and provided them with a safe and supportive environment in which to learn and grow.

Today, the school serves more than 400 children, offering education and additional support to children from families experiencing significant economic challenges.

But what makes Amatsiko special goes beyond the classroom.

Children receive educational support, nutritious meals, mentoring and assistance designed to support their wider wellbeing.

For us, education is about more than passing examinations. It is about helping children discover their abilities, develop confidence and build the foundations for a future filled with possibilities.

There is something particularly meaningful about the name Amatsiko.

In Rukiga, the local language spoken around Kabale, Amatsiko means hope.

It is a name that reflects the very reason the organisation exists.

And that hope would eventually grow into something much bigger.

Explore the story, mission and work of Amatsiko Organisation.

2. Beyond the Classroom: Helping Families Build a Better Future

As Amatsiko continued supporting children through education, another important realisation emerged.

A child’s opportunities are closely connected to the circumstances of the family and community in which they grow up.

A child may have access to a classroom, but what happens when their family struggles to provide nutritious food? What happens when collecting water consumes hours of the day? What happens when parents have limited opportunities to generate income?

Education cannot exist in isolation from these everyday realities.

This understanding encouraged Amatsiko to expand its work beyond the school gates.

The organisation began working more closely with guardian families and surrounding communities, sharing practical knowledge about nutrition, hygiene, sanitation and sustainable farming.

The idea was to help families develop skills that could improve their own circumstances.

It was also an opportunity to recognise something important: communities should not simply be recipients of assistance. They should be active participants in shaping their own futures.

Through workshops, practical demonstrations and community engagement, families could learn, exchange knowledge and work together towards common goals.

For example, encouraging families to grow vegetables can improve access to nutritious food. Teaching sustainable agricultural practices can help households make better use of their land. Supporting income-generating activities can provide families with greater financial independence.

These may appear to be small interventions, but their combined benefits can be significant.

A healthier household creates a better environment for children to grow. A family with improved food security has more opportunities to concentrate on other priorities. A community with stronger livelihoods becomes better positioned to support its younger generations.

This is the thinking that eventually inspired another important initiative: Dream Village.

3. Dream Village: Turning Hope into Practical Community Solutions

Imagine a mother in a rural village in southwestern Uganda waking up early in the morning.

Before preparing breakfast or attending to other household responsibilities, she must think about one essential task: finding water.

For many rural families, access to clean water has historically involved long walks, carrying heavy containers and spending valuable hours away from other activities.

Children can also be affected, sometimes spending time collecting water instead of attending school or completing their studies.

This is one of the challenges that inspired the Dream Village Project.

Developed through Go Organic Africa, the initiative works with communities to promote practical solutions that improve livelihoods, nutrition, water access and environmental sustainability.

Rather than focusing on one problem at a time, Dream Village looks at how different aspects of rural life are connected.

Let’s explore some of the work behind this vision.

Rainwater Harvesting: Giving Families More Time for Life

Water is essential for everything: cooking, drinking, cleaning, growing food and maintaining good health.

Yet access to reliable water remains a challenge for many rural households.

In Buzaniro, where Go Organic Africa works with vulnerable families, the Dream Village initiative introduced household rainwater harvesting systems.

The project began working with the community in June 2021, supporting families through systems that collect rainwater from rooftops and store it in household tanks.

The tanks have an approximate capacity of 7,000 litres.

This simple but practical solution can make a tremendous difference.

Instead of relying entirely on distant water sources, families can collect and store rainwater during the rainy seasons for use throughout the year.

The project also incorporates biosand filtration systems to improve water quality.

Think about what this means for a household.

A mother can spend less time searching for water and more time caring for her family or tending to her garden. Children can have more time for school and play. Families can have greater control over one of their most essential daily needs.

Access to water is not simply about convenience. It can create opportunities for better health, improved livelihoods and greater dignity.

Nutritional Gardens: Growing More Than Vegetables

Another important aspect of Dream Village is the promotion of household nutritional gardens and fruit forests.

In many rural communities, families depend heavily on a limited range of foods. Access to diverse and nutritious produce can be affected by household income, seasonal availability and agricultural challenges.

Dream Village encourages families to establish gardens where they can grow vegetables and fruit for household consumption.

The project reports that more than 600 trees and 45,000 vegetable seedlings have been planted.

These gardens can provide a valuable source of fresh food while helping families develop practical agricultural skills.

There is also something beautiful about growing food close to home.

A garden can become a place where parents teach children about the soil, seeds, seasons and the importance of caring for nature.

A small vegetable plot can provide food for the family, while surplus produce may offer opportunities for additional household income.

It is an approach that connects nutrition, environmental care and economic resilience.

Rabbit Breeding: Creating Opportunities Through Small Livestock

Dream Village also promotes rabbit breeding as a practical way for households to access additional sources of protein and potentially generate income.

For families with limited land and resources, small livestock can provide opportunities that may be difficult to achieve through larger agricultural investments.

With appropriate training and animal care, rabbit breeding can contribute to household nutrition and livelihood diversification.

Community Savings Groups: Building Strength Together

Another important element is the development of community savings groups.

Families working together on activities such as rainwater harvesting, gardening and rabbit breeding have opportunities to establish savings groups.

Members contribute regularly and can access funds when facing emergencies or when they need to invest in income-generating activities.

Beyond the financial benefits, these groups encourage cooperation, trust and shared responsibility.

They demonstrate an important principle behind Dream Village: lasting development becomes stronger when communities participate in creating and managing their own solutions.

4. Why We Started Amatsiko Tours: Connecting Travel with a Greater Purpose

By this point, the vision behind Amatsiko had grown considerably.

There was a school supporting vulnerable children. There were community initiatives addressing water access, nutrition and sustainable livelihoods.

But an important question remained:

How could we create a more reliable and sustainable source of income to support these initiatives over the long term?

Depending entirely on charitable contributions and external donations was not the future we envisioned.

We wanted to explore a model that could generate its own income while remaining connected to the original mission.

And then we looked at something Uganda has in abundance: extraordinary tourism potential.

Uganda is blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, welcoming communities and remarkable wildlife.

From the mist-covered forests of Bwindi to the open savannahs of Murchison Falls National Park, from the beautiful islands of Lake Bunyonyi to the adventure-filled waters of the River Nile, the country offers experiences that can stay with travellers for a lifetime.

Tourism also creates opportunities for thousands of Ugandans.

It supports guides, drivers, accommodation providers, restaurant owners, farmers, craftspeople, conservation workers and many other people whose livelihoods are connected to visitors.

We began to see an opportunity.

What if we could create a tourism company that offered exceptional travel experiences while generating income to support the school and community initiatives?

What if every successful tour could contribute to something meaningful beyond the experience itself?

This is how Amatsiko Tours was established.

The idea was not to create a tourism company with a charitable project attached as an afterthought.

It was to build a tourism business whose purpose was connected to the development vision that had inspired Amatsiko from the beginning.

We wanted travellers to experience the beauty of Uganda while becoming part of a model that helps support the people and communities behind that beauty.

And that is what makes Amatsiko Tours different.

5. How Your Journey Makes a Difference: Understanding Our 20% Commitment

One of the most important commitments we have made is that 20% of the profits generated by Amatsiko Tours goes towards supporting Amatsiko Preparatory School and community development initiatives through the Dream Village vision.

This is how we connect tourism with positive community impact.

When you book a safari, cultural experience or other journey with Amatsiko Tours, you are supporting a tourism business that has a commitment to reinvesting part of its profits in education and community development.

Your journey can therefore contribute to several areas.

Helping Vulnerable Children Access Education

Education creates opportunities that can influence a child’s entire future.

Tourism profits help support the running of Amatsiko Preparatory School and the needs of the children under its care.

This includes supporting the educational environment through essential resources and the wider needs involved in keeping a school operating.

It means helping create an environment where children can learn, develop confidence and work towards their ambitions.

Imagine visiting Uganda, enjoying an unforgettable wildlife experience and knowing that the success of the business you travelled with contributes to helping vulnerable children access education.

That is a meaningful connection between travel and the future.

Supporting Access to Clean Water

Water is one of life’s most basic necessities, yet many rural families still face challenges accessing it.

Through the Dream Village initiatives, community support can contribute to practical solutions such as household rainwater harvesting systems.

A water tank may seem like a simple structure, but for a family that previously spent hours collecting water, it can represent a significant improvement in daily life.

It can mean more time for children to study, more time for parents to work and greater household resilience.

Helping Families Grow Their Own Food

Supporting household gardens and fruit trees is another way tourism can contribute to community development.

These initiatives encourage families to produce nutritious food, develop agricultural skills and improve their ability to meet household needs.

A productive garden is not simply about vegetables. It is about food security, knowledge and the opportunity to build a more resilient household.

Strengthening Community Livelihoods

The Dream Village vision also recognises the importance of helping families develop sustainable ways of improving their incomes.

Through activities such as small livestock projects, agricultural training and savings groups, communities can develop skills and opportunities that continue benefiting them beyond a single intervention.

This is why our commitment goes beyond education alone.

We believe that supporting children also means helping create stronger communities in which they can grow and thrive.

Your holiday may last a few days or a few weeks. But the opportunities supported by responsible tourism can extend much further.

6. Discover Uganda While Supporting the People Who Call It Home

One of the things we love most about Uganda is that its beauty cannot be captured by wildlife photographs alone.

Yes, seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an extraordinary experience.

Yes, watching elephants cross the savannah or hearing the thunder of Murchison Falls is unforgettable.

But Uganda is also about the people you meet along the way.

It is about sitting down to enjoy a traditional meal prepared with fresh local ingredients.

It is about visiting a local market, discovering unfamiliar fruits and vegetables, and listening to the conversations and laughter that fill the streets.

It is about meeting farmers who understand the seasons, craftspeople who preserve traditional skills and local guides who know the landscapes through years of experience.

It is about learning how people live, what they value and what makes their communities special.

When you travel with Amatsiko Tours, we encourage you to embrace these experiences.

Consider visiting community initiatives where appropriate and with the community’s consent. Support local businesses. Purchase handmade crafts directly from artisans. Enjoy locally prepared meals and choose experiences that allow communities to participate meaningfully in tourism.

You can also explore Uganda’s extraordinary natural attractions while making thoughtful choices that support conservation.

For example, when visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking, follow the guidance of Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, maintain the required distance from wildlife and respect all visitor regulations.

These choices help protect the natural environment while supporting the people working to conserve it.

We believe that a meaningful journey should allow visitors to enjoy Uganda while respecting its people, wildlife and natural heritage.

7. What Responsible Travel Really Means at Amatsiko Tours

Responsible tourism is sometimes presented as a list of restrictions: things travellers should not do, places they should avoid or activities they should refuse.

But we see it differently.

We believe responsible travel is about making thoughtful choices that improve the experience for everyone involved.

It is about discovering a destination while recognising that you are entering somebody else’s home.

Here are some simple ways to make your Ugandan journey more meaningful.

Choose locally rooted tourism businesses.

Where possible, travel with operators that employ local people, work with communities and demonstrate a genuine commitment to sharing tourism benefits.

Respect local cultures and traditions.

Uganda is culturally diverse. Take time to understand local customs, ask permission before photographing people and approach cultural experiences with curiosity and respect.

Support local products and businesses.

Buy crafts directly from artisans, eat at locally owned restaurants and consider accommodation providers that source products from surrounding communities.

Protect wildlife and natural environments.

Follow park regulations, avoid littering, respect wildlife viewing distances and choose responsible wildlife experiences.

Be thoughtful when visiting schools and community projects.

Community visits should be organised with the consent and participation of the people involved. Always respect children’s privacy and dignity. Avoid treating vulnerable communities as tourist attractions or photographing children without appropriate permission.

These choices help create a better relationship between visitors and host communities.

And they make travel more rewarding.
