Amatsiko Tours: Back-to-Basics Nature Experience

Travel in Uganda that gives back: Amatsiko Tours’ commitment to regenerative travel

By Esther M. van Ruth, MA, MSc, Founder and CEO of Positive Impact Tourism

Travel has the power to change us.
But increasingly, travelers are asking a deeper question:

Can travel also change places for the better?

At Positive Impact Tourism, we believe it can and this belief sits at the heart of everything we do. We believe tourism should not only minimize harm but actively contribute to thriving communities, healthy ecosystems, and meaningful cultural exchange. This is what we call regenerative travel; travel that leaves destinations stronger than before.

When I first connected with Amatsiko Tours in 2025, I immediately recognized a shared philosophy. Their work in Uganda goes beyond guiding visitors through beautiful landscapes. They are deeply rooted in their community, investing in education, conservation, and local livelihoods through tourism itself.

Together, we developed a series of itineraries designed to show what travel can look like when impact and experience go hand in hand.

 From Sustainable to Regenerative Travel

Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing negative impacts: using fewer resources, protecting wildlife, and supporting local economies. Regenerative tourism goes a step further and asks:

  • How can visitors actively contribute to communities?
  • How can tourism restore natural environments?
  • How can cultural exchange become mutual learning?

Community life, agriculture, storytelling, and connection to land are already deeply intertwined at Amatsiko Tours. The role of responsible tourism is simply to support and strengthen what already exists.

The tours that we have co-created together with Amatsiko Tours invite you not to stand outside local life, but to participate respectfully within it.

1. Connecting over shared meals

One of the experiences we co-created together is the 6-Day Culinary Themed Regional Experience, built around a simple truth: food is one of the most powerful bridges between cultures.

Rather than dining as spectators, you step into markets, kitchens and farms. By cooking alongside women’s groups, harvesting ingredients with farmers, and sharing meals with families around Lake Bunyonyi, you will create unforgettable memories. And not just that. You will also generate direct income for local producers, support women’s empowerment initiatives, and celebrate culinary traditions that might otherwise be overlooked.

In this itinerary, food becomes storytelling. And storytelling becomes human connection.

2. Finding richness in simplicity

Modern travel often moves too fast and many travelers return home needing a vacation from their vacation before going back to work. This is what inspired the 5-Day Back-to-Basics Nature Experience, an itinerary designed around truly slowing down and reconnecting; with nature, with community, and with ourselves.

During this experience, you stay in eco-lodges and homestays along Lake Bunyonyi and you experience the daily village life. The life most of us have either forgotten or never experienced: cooking over open fires, farming alongside your hosts, canoeing across calm waters, and participating in conservation activities such as tree planting and lake clean-ups.

What makes this journey special is its richness in simplicity. You don’t just observe sustainable living, you practice it. And in doing so, you will begin to understand how tourism can support environmental stewardship while nurturing personal wellbeing.

3. Exhilarating sightings

Uganda is famous for its extraordinary biodiversity, and many travelers dream of trekking to see mountain gorillas. But wildlife experiences become even so much more powerful when you connect to the people and ecosystems that protect them.

The 9-Day Western Uganda with Impact Experience combines iconic adventures with genuine engagement. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest sits alongside visits to organic farms and conservation initiatives.

Witness firsthand how conservation, education, and livelihoods are interconnected. You will plant some trees, support ranger programs, join cultural workshops, and contribute to sustainable agriculture projects. All integrated naturally into your journey.

The result is not leaving a place as you have found it, but leaving it better than you have found it so it may thrive. .

Tourism as a Force for Community Empowerment

The best thing about our Partnership with Amatsiko Tours, is that social and environmental impact is not a buzzword or marketing add-on; it is embedded in how they operate with the Amatsiko School and in their Partnership with us.

Your travel fee helps to support:

  • educational opportunities for children and youth
  • women’s cooperatives and local entrepreneurs
  • sustainable farming initiatives
  • conservation and environmental restoration
  • training opportunities for young guides entering the tourism sector

This approach ensures that tourism benefits extend far beyond the duration of a visitor’s stay. When you leave, the positive ripple effects of your active contributions remain.

 Why our Partnership matters

At Positive Impact Tourism, we collaborate with partners who are committed to contribute to the welfare of their communities and natural environments. Regenerative travel cannot be created from the outside; it must grow from local leadership!

Amatsiko Tours exemplifies this principle. Their deep local relationships allow experiences to be authentic, respectful, and mutually beneficial. Our role is to help shape the journeys that align travelers’ expectations with real community impact. To ensure that the regenerative experiences we co-create are meaningful for both guests and hosts.

Partnerships like this show that tourism can evolve into something more balanced, more human, and more hopeful. They show that when we collaborate to integrate activities that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, travel becomes a force for good!

Frequently asked questions

Regenerative travel goes beyond minimizing negative impacts. While sustainable tourism focuses on reducing harm, regenerative travel actively contributes to improving destinations. This means supporting local communities, restoring natural environments, and creating meaningful cultural exchange so that places and people benefit long after you return home.

Amatsiko Tours works closely with the Amatsiko School, farmers, women’s groups, conservation initiatives, and community organizations. A portion of your travel fee directly supports education, sustainable livelihoods, environmental restoration, and training opportunities for young guides. In addition, the itineraries co-created with Positive Impact Tourism facilitate you to contribute hands-on to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Not at all. These journeys are designed for curious and respectful travelers. Activities such as cooking with families, tree planting, cultural exchanges, or farm visits are accessible to all travelers with a regular fitness  level. The experiences focus on mutual learning and connection, rather than on the exchange of skills.

Absolutely!
Positive impact travel enhances traditional travel experiences rather than replacing them. For example, the Western Uganda with Impact Experience combines bucket-list moments like gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with community engagement and conservation activities, creating a deeper and more meaningful journey.

These itineraries are ideal for travelers who want more than sightseeing. They appeal to people seeking authentic cultural connection, slower and more mindful travel, nature immersion, and activities that contribute positively to the places they visit. Whether traveling solo, as a couple, or in a small group, guests who value purpose alongside adventure tend to find these journeys especially rewarding.
