Day 9 – Safari Sunset in Lake Mburo
A hidden gem above Lake Mburo National Park—windy afternoons, grazing zebras, and sunset safaris
Table of Contents
We stayed at the wonderful Bweza Kibale Lodges. Our “small” breakfast turned into a feast: starter plates of watermelon and pineapple, ginger-spiced watermelon juice, toast, a cooked breakfast, tea and coffee. Fortified and full, we set off towards Lake Mburo National Park.
High Above the Savannah
We checked in at Eagle’s Nest, a tented camp perched on a high, windy hill overlooking Lake Mburo. With a 280-degree view stretching across the park, it’s not just a lodge—it’s a wildlife observatory. Guests often spot zebras, impalas, buffalo and even giraffes from their private verandas.
My tent overlooked an open savannah plain—complete with zebras grazing on a football pitch far below my perch. It was incredibly windy when we arrived but it died down later on, the view was expansive.
Late Afternoon Game Drive
After a couple of hours’ downtime enjoying the scenery, we headed back into the park for our evening game drive. With the roof popped up, I stood ready for every photo and video opportunity—and the moment felt like a dream.
Lake Mburo National Park may be Uganda’s smallest, but it is packed with wildlife: zebras, impalas, water bucks, warthogs, buffalo—even elands and topi—yet no elephants or lions, making it perfect for close encounter photo safaris. The open plains were dotted with silhouettes as the sun began to dip.
Giraffes were among the first animals we spotted on our game drive—tall and elegant, silhouetted against the setting sun. Lake Mburo is home to the Rothschild’s giraffe, one of the most endangered subspecies in the world. They moved slowly through the acacia trees, nibbling at the leaves with their long, prehensile tongues. Their graceful movements were mesmerising, and it felt like such a privilege to watch them in the wild, completely at ease in their natural habitat.
We paused for a zebra crossing and as a herd of impalas bounded across our path, their graceful leaps a symphony in motion. Nearby, a warthog couple grunted as they rooted through the undergrowth. The silence of dusk, broken only by animal calls, felt like an invitation to breathe out.

💛 Personal Reflection
Today reminded me that sometimes less is more. A simple camp, a vast plain, and the presence of wild grace is enough to make your soul still.
Tomorrow we’re on top of the world at Lake Mburo where dreams come true
