Changing Money in Uganda

What to know before you exchange or spend
Uganda’s local currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). The exchange rate typically ranges between UGX 3,500–4,000 per US dollar, depending on market conditions and where you exchange.
US dollars are widely accepted for tourism-related payments like accommodation, national park fees, and safari activities. However, it’s important to bring new, clean notes issued after 2009. Worn, torn, marked, or older bills are often rejected by banks and forex bureaus.
Uganda Is Mostly a Cash Economy
Many lodges, restaurants, and even park offices don’t accept credit or debit cards—especially in rural areas. Park permits and many local services must be paid in cash. For this reason, we strongly recommend carrying sufficient cash in both Ugandan shillings and US dollars when traveling for gorilla trekking in Uganda
Where to Exchange Money
- You’ll find reliable forex bureaus in major towns like Entebbe, Kampala, Kabale, and Fort Portal.
- Banks also exchange money, though queues can be longer.
- Avoid changing money at the airport unless necessary, as rates are less favourable.
Can I Use ATMs?
Yes—ATMs are widely available in towns and cities, and most accept international Visa cards. Some also support Mastercard. That said, ATMs in rural areas can be limited or out of service, so always withdraw enough cash before traveling to Bwindi or remote safari destinations.
💡 Top tip: Break down large denominations when you can—small bills are useful for tips, markets, and roadside purchases.
