Planning how you’ll get from A to B in Uganda? Whether you’re navigating the busy streets of Kampala or heading deep into the national parks, this guide covers the best transport options for tourists—including how Amatsiko Tours handles your transfers, so you can relax and enjoy the ride.
Private Transfers with Amatsiko Tours
All of our tours include private vehicle transfers with a local driver-guide, so you don’t need to worry about arranging transport yourself. This is by far the most comfortable and reliable way to explore Uganda—especially in rural or mountainous areas like Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, and Kibale.
Our vehicles are 4x4s—essential for Uganda’s national parks and backroads, where terrain can be rough, muddy, or steep. We handle the driving so you can enjoy the views, spot wildlife, and get to your destination safely.
Self-Drive Car Hire (Only for the Confident!)
If you’re an experienced traveller with 4×4 skills and a sense of adventure, self-drive is possible—but be warned:
- Roads in rural areas are often unpaved, potholed, and challenging, especially during rainy season.
- Driving in Uganda is on the left, and traffic in cities can be chaotic.
- Fuel stations are less frequent in remote areas—plan ahead.
Unless you’re confident and have driven in Africa before, we recommend hiring a car with a driver.
Local Transport Options (Not Recommended for Tourists)
You’ll see locals using:
- Matatus – Shared minibus taxis, often crowded and lacking seatbelts.
- Boda bodas – Motorcycle taxis popular in towns, but with high accident rates.
- Uber/Bolt – Available in Kampala for short distances, but not in rural areas.
While these are cheap and common, they aren’t ideal for tourists due to safety concerns and limited coverage.
Long-Distance Travel by Bus or Coach
Buses run between major towns and are budget-friendly, but they can be slow, overcrowded, and prone to delays or accidents. For safety and comfort, this isn’t our recommended option.
Domestic Flights Across Uganda
For travellers short on time or heading to remote parks, domestic flights are a great option:
- Aerolink Uganda – Scheduled flights to national parks like Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo.
- Eagle Air – Connects major towns and offers private charters.
- BAR Aviation Uganda – Scheduled and charter flights to top safari destinations including Kisoro, Kasese, Arua, Bugungu, and Murchison Falls.
How Far Apart Are Uganda’s Main Destinations?
Uganda may look small on the map, but travel takes time. Here’s a rough idea of driving times:
- Kampala to Lake Bunyonyi – 8–10 hours
- Lake Bunyonyi to Bwindi – 2–3 hours
- Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth NP – 4–5 hours
- Queen Elizabeth to Kibale Forest – 2.5–3 hours
All travel times depend on road conditions and weather.
